North Lawrence Community School board

Bedford North Lawrence High School Principal Todd Tanskley asked the school board in December 2019 to move to the new scheduling system as high schools across the state already have.

The new system went from a two semester grading period to three semester grading period.

The original recommendation came from seven school teachers and Ms. Clark a guidance counselor at Bedford North Lawrence High School.

The move was suggested to help with professional development.

Under the tris- semester each grading period is twelve weeks long. This was to help improve instructional time, along with opportunities for the students.

The new system was to help improve grades, attendance, and discipline issues.

Bedford-North Lawrence High School received a $200,000 grant to help with staff development and planning.

Other high schools have went to a block scheduling system.

In the second year of the new system some teachers have not liked the new system as it have created some issues for them. A survey from teachers were to be surveyed with the results to be presented at the next work session. Many parents and students have favored the new tri-semesters.

Lacy Hawkins, NLEA teacher president presented concerns from teachers on the new grading period.

At the conclusion of the work session of the NLCS a recommendation by Hawkins and high school leadership that a decision needed to be made quickly for the next school year due to student scheduling.
