One treated for smoke inhalation as Indiana State Marshal's Office investigates house fire Friday

MITCHELL - OCTOBER 14,2023 - Update: Justin Scott Bowden age 35, Mitchell, Indiana has been arrested for Arson. Details on his arrest is not available. Bowden was booked into Lawrence County Jail at 5:000 am Saturday morning.

One person was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation at a house fire at 504 West Oak Street in Mitchell, Indiana Friday night.



Ambulance personnel from IU Lifeline Ambulance treated the person who was not transported to the hospital.

Mitchell and Marion Township firefighters was dispatched to the fire at 10:34 pm Friday night and was advised during the dispatch that a person may be trapped.



" When we arrived all four occupants of the home made it out safely," said Wayne Coble Assistant Fire Chief Mitchell Volunteer Fire Department.


" We have contacted the Indiana State Fire Marshal's to determine what caused the fire, and no other information is available at this time," added Coble.


Some of the occupants escaped without any shoes on, and nearby residents provided them shoes as they sat in front of the American Legion on West Oak Street and watched firefighters work to bring the fire under control.



The occupants was able to find a place to stay for the night.



Neighbors told the Lawrence County Zephyr that a person was seen leaving the porch area of the residence and the fire may have been intentionally set.


The Mitchell Police Department and Lawrence County Sheriff's Department are assisting in the fire marshal's investigation. But at the time of this news story the Mitchell Police Department was not available to provide any information or comment.


Duke Energy disconnected the power to the residence.

At 2:35 am Saturday morning firefighters had to return to the fire scene with a full call out for additional manpower after the fire rekindled.


Strong winds and rain complicated firefighting efforts.


Oak Street between 5th and 7th and was closed for several hours as firefighters worked late Friday night into early Saturday morning to bring the fire under control.


The American Legion Post 250 brought firefighters bottled water to keep them hydrated.
