One Person airlifted in fiery traffic accident at Indiana State Road 37 north in Lawrence County

LAWRENCE COUNTY - SEPTEMBER 8, 2023 - One person was airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis following a two-car fiery vehicle accident Friday morning.


The person airlifted was not in the vehicle involved in the fire following the collision.

The accident was reported at 11:36 am Friday morning. when two vehicles collided at the intersection of Indiana 37 Northbound Lane and Old State Road 37.


One of the vehicles landed in the northbound lane and the second vehicle going over and across the southbound lane of State Road 37 landing over the embankment on the westside of the highway.


The vehicle that landed in the southbound lane caught on fire, however the driver was able to escape the flames.

Emergency crews from Bedford Fire Department had to extricate a 19-year-old driver and only occupant from his vehicle.


His name is being withheld until the Lawrence County Police complete their investigation.



The man was treated at the scene by ambulance personnel from IU Lifeline ambulance crews. He was then taken to a landing zone at the Cornerstone Church located near the scene to wait on an air ambulance to transport him to Methodist Hospital. The helicopter was on the scene several minutes before lifting off the ground.

The other driver was able to escape serious injury and was transported non-emergent to IU Health Bloomington Hospital.

A complete accident report from Lawrence County Police Department has not been completed.



The vehicles were towed from the scene by Mikels and Blands wrecker services.


Lawrence County Sheriff Department, Bedford Fire Department, Oolitic Volunteer Fire Department, two IU Lifeline Ambulances, Air Methods air ambulance, Blands and Mikels Service responded to the scene.
