Mitchell man escapes fully- involved residential fire Friday morning

MITCHELL - SEPTEMBER 1, 2023 - A Mitchell man escaped a fully involved residential fire with minor injuries Friday morning.

A neighbor seen the large column of smoke billowing from the residence across the road in the 2000 block of Spice Valley Road just before noon.



She rushed over to the residence along with Mitchell Police Department officer Michael Bargo yelling "Is there anyone inside" due to vehicles still in the driveway.



No one replied to there calls and officer Bargo looking inside a garage and around the residence to see if anyone was inside.


There were fears someone was still inside.



Fire crews from Marion Township, and Mitchell Volunteer Fire Departments arrived and began fighting the fire.


Within several minutes the property owner and the only occupant emerged from the woods along Spice Valley Road.


A neighbor using his ATV brought the man to IU Lifeline Ambulance crews to be treated by ambulance crews with minor burns.



He is the only occupant of the residence.


Firefighters from Marion Township, Mitchell, and Shawswick Township, Mitchell Police Department, and IU Lifeline Ambulance Service responded to the fire.



At this time the cause of the fire is not known.




Fire Chief Paul Gillespie was not available for comment.


Mitchell Police Chief Troy Lobosky, and Michael Bargo assisted firefighters at the scene.
