The Unity Celebration first started under Bedford City Mayor John Williams who was asked about doing the bringing the community together from Clarence Brown almost 35 years ago.

The event is held in all kinds of weather

Clarance Brown says he did not know what racism was, until making his way to Tennessee in his college years.

Living in Bedford, Brown's family did not face any of the problems the negroes faced in many communities throughout the United States.

The event brings a time of song, reflection and how to keep the community together in the spirit of unity and of love. In addition, noting that many communities and race relations are not like what they are in the Lawrence County area.

The event normally ends with a march around the courthouse or to a nearby church in Bedford.
