Andrew Riggs Sworn in as Oolitic Deputy Marshal Friday Afternoon

OOLITIC - NOVEMBER 4, 2022 - The Oolitic Town Council approved the hiring of a deputy marshal during a special meeting of the town council Friday afternoon.


Andrew Riggs was immediately sworn in following the hiring.

Riggs will work approximately 20 hours a week, with a pay of $17.15 an hour.


" This is an exciting adventure to be able to serve the town. I want to be able to give back to the community," said Riggs. " I look forward to assisting everyone, Lawrence County,"


Riggs is currently, a Sergeant for IU Health Bloomington Hospital, graduated Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in 2021, and previously a corrections officer for the Monroe County Sheriff's Department.


Riggs will be replacing two deputies that have resigned from the Oolitic Marshal's office.


In other business:


Approved the following town ordinance will take effect following 30 days following the newspaper publication of the new ordinances.


  • Tap fees for water mains - $850

  • Sewer connection fees - $850

  • Fire hydrant Metering fees - $800 with a $3,500 fee for any damage to the meter with revenue to be deposited in the water/ sewer fund.

  • 2022 Police accident report fees - $10 a copy for vehicle accident report, $5 per photo of accident report, $10 for video flash drive of accident, all revenue to be deposited in the law enforcement education fee.

Approved a new contract with Bynum in the amount of $5,412 for Water Treatment plant monitoring and City of Bedford Water monitoring. This will be the second year, for Bynum to monitor the town's water and sewer systems. There was a slight increase in charges over the last year.


The town council took no action on equipment purchase request from the Street Department until more information can be obtained and look at finances of the town. In addition, the town council wanted to prioritize the needs of the department.
