SEVEN INJURED IN HEAD-ON COLLISION ON SPORTMANS CLUB ROAD THANKSGIVING NIGHT

MITCHELL - NOVEMBER 24, 2022 - Seven people were injured in a head-on collision in the 700 block of Sportsmans Club Road Thanksgiving Night.

The 911 call reporting the accident came in at 9:52 p.m.


A SUV and Mini-Van collied with one of the drivers fleeing the scene according to a bystander. The Lawrence County Sheriff's Department was able to locate the driver and was being detained at the scene.




Marion Township Fire Chief Paul Gillespie says that at least six patients are being transported to the hospital from the scene of the accident. Three of those patients were pediatric patients and none of the patients were critical.


Several of the patients were deaf which made communication difficult for emergency personnel.



At the time two air ambulances were being dispatched to the scene, however due to weather they were not able to fly.


Seals Ambulance Service and IU Lifeline Ambulance Service responded to the scene. Martin County Ambulance Service was dispatched to the scene however due to an extended response time were disregarded.


Marion Township uses oil dry to clean-up fluid leakage on Sportsmans Club Road


Firefighters from Marion Township used oil dry to clean-up fluids that were leaking on the roadway. Bedford Fire Department Rescue Truck was dispatched to the accident on reports of entrapment, but fire crews were able to reach the patients, therefore Bedford Fire Department was also disregarded.



Lawrence County Sheriff's Department continues to investigate the accident and details have not emerged on how the accident happened.


Lawrence County Sheriff's Department, Oolitic Town Marshal's Office, Marion Township Volunteer Fire Department, Seals Ambulance Service and IU Health Ambulance Service responded to the scene.


Emergency crews were on the scene for over two hours while the accident was being investigated and scene cleaned up.
