One Man transported to IU Health Bloomington Following fiery crash near Avoca turn-off

AVOCA - NOVEMBER 18, 2022 -Correction to original story: The person involved in last night's crash was female. Emergency personnel told Lawrence County Zephyr the victim was male. A accident full accident report is not available at this time.


One man was transported to IU Health Bloomington Hospital following a fiery crash on Indiana State Road 37 near the Avoca turnoff.


Lawrence County Central dispatch was receiving reports of an erratic driver before the accident occurred.



The accident happened around 9:29 p.m. reporting the vehicle crash and on the vehicle on fire.



Bedford Fire Department and Marshall Township Volunteer Fire Department arrived on the scene to find the vehicle fully involved.


The vehicle struck a stop light warning sign on the northbound lane of Indiana State Road 37. The male driver was able to get out of the vehicle, however his exact injuries were on known.


It appeared the vehicle was traveling southbound on Indiana State Road 37 and went towards the northbound lane striking the traffic device warning sign.


IU Lifeline Ambulance crews was trying to contact an air ambulance service to transport the patient to a trauma center. However, at the time there were no air ambulances available. The decision was made to go ahead and transport the patient to IU Health Bloomington Hospital.



Lifeline helicopter crews were going to meet the ambulance at the IU Health Bloomington helipad.


The northbound lanes of Indiana State Road 37 between Oolitic and Avoca were closed for about 45 minutes while emergency crews worked the accident.



Lawrence County Sheriff's Department is continuing their investigation into the crash.


Bedford Police Department, Bedford Fire Department, Lawrence County Sheriff's Department, Marshall Township Volunteer Fire Department and Jackson Heavy Haul responded to the accident.
