No One Injured After Building Collapses in Loogootee

LOOGOOTEE - OCTOBER 28, 2022 - No one was injured when a building collapsed at Greenwell Hardware in Loogootee. According to Mike Kirk, assistant fire chief of Loogootee Fire Department the collapsed happened around 1:00 p.m. Friday afternoon.


Greenwell Hardware is Loogootee's oldest building built in 1863


Five people were in the building at the time of the incident, was able to escape unharmed.


A employee was moving merchandise and noticed things were starting to fall from above.

The store receives merchandise on Fridays and was working in putting it on shelves.


The building itself was constructed in 18963 and is believed to be the oldest building in Loogootee.



" This is a major inconvenience for the community as now patrons will have to got to Washington to get their hardware," said Assistant Chief Kirk. " We are just lucky no one was injured,"


At this time, it is unknown what the owner will do, but most likely will rebuild. An insurance adjuster from Indianapolis is expected to arrive sometime this evening and assess the damage.


The area around Mill Street and Church Street is barricaded off.
