Mitchell woman devasted by the loss of her home from a fire Wednesday afternoon

MITCHELL - NOVEMBER 29, 2023 - A Mitchell woman is devasted over loosing her home due to a fire Wednesday afteernoon.

" My home was given to me by my grandad, I paid him rent for years, for purchase and finally got it paid off. This is the only thing that was mine, and did not have to worry about this home with my recent divorce," said Colleen Griffin home owner.

The mobile home was located at 511 South 5th Sttreet and when firefighters from the Mitchell Volunteer Fire Department arrived they found heavy smoke conditions.

Colleen Griffin was thankful herself and two dogs made it out safely. Griffin was evaluated at the scene by IU Lifeline ambulance personnel.


Tears poured down her face as she is now homeless and had no insurance on her home. Griffin was waiting on the American Red Cross to find her a place to stay this evening.

" A person was working on the electrial system in the home when the fire occured. We are not sure what caused the fire today. There was additions made to the roof that complicated in getting the fire out," said Mitchell Assistant Fire Chief Fred Cassidy.


Firefighters worked over an hour to get the fire out, using a nearby fire hydrant to supply water.



Mitchell Police Department investigated a minor accident between a Mitchell fire engine and a IU Lifeline Ambulance.


Firefighters remained on the scene until about 6:00 pm.



Firefighters from Mitchell Volunteer Fire Department, Marion Township, Huron VFD, Shawswick Township responded to fire along with IU Lifeline Ambulance, Mitchell Police Department, Duke Energy, and Mitchell Utilities.
