Mitchell Man Arrested for Arson Saturday Morning

MITCHELL - OCTOBER 14, 2023 - A Mitchell man has been arrested for arson after four occupants barely escaped a residential fire Friday night at 504 West Oak Street in Mitchell.



At this time the Lawrence County Zephyr has not been provided details of Justin Scott Bowden 35, Mitchell, Indiana arrest for arson.


Bowden was booked into the Lawrence County Jail at 5:00 am Saturday morning.

At 10:34 pm Friday night Mitchell and Marion Township Volunteer Fire Departments were dispatched to 504 West Oak Street reporting a person may be trapped inside.



Firefighters quickly arrived on scene to discover all four occupants made it safely out. However, one person was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene by IU Lifeline Ambulance personnel.


Neighbors told the Lawrence County Zephyr that they seen a male run from the porch area and the fire may have been intentionally set.


One neighbor telling the Lawrence County Zephyr that a camera caught the person possibly setting the fire then leaving from the porch of the residence.



The Indiana State Fire Marshal's Office was contacted as Mitchell Police Department who was assisted by the Lawrence County Sheriff's Department started their investigation.

The suspect in the case was located and detained at the scene for several hours before being arrested and booked on a single count of arson.


The Mitchell and Marion Township Volunteer Fire Department had to call additional manpower after the fire rekindled around 2:35 am Saturday morning.


The occupants of the home was able to find a place to stay for the evening.

Some of the residents had to escape the fire barefooted and neighbors help locate some shoes as they watched firefighters fight the wind driven fire.


Mitchell Volunteer Fire Department, Mitchell Police Department, Marion Township Volunteer Fire Department, IU Lifeline Ambulance, Indiana State Fire Marshal's Office, Lawrence County Sheriff's Department, and Duke Energy responded to the scene.
