MITCHELL - JULY 31, 2023 - Lawrence County Sheriff's Department investigated a fatal accident on Meridian Road Friday afternoon.

The call reporting the accident came in at 4:54 pm with emergency personnel from Lawrence County Sheriff's Department, Bedford Fire Department, Marion Township Volunteer Fire Department, IU Lifeline Ambulance Service, and Indiana State Police.
George Troxel, 24, Mitchell, was traveling south on Meridian Road in a 2003 Jeep Cherokee attempting to navigate a curve, and went off the roadway just south of Yockey Road.
When his vehicle re-entered the roadway Troxel lost control of the vehicle and begin to slide. The Jeep then went across the Meridian Road, striking a group of rocks on the eastside of the roadway. The Jeep rolled onto the passenger side striking a tree.
Troxel died at the scene of the crash.
Accident investigation believe that excessive speed contributed to the accident.
Indiana State Police was contacted to reconstruct the accident scene.
