Lawrence County Circuit Judge Nathan Nikirk and Jim Pittman Visit Schools for Constitution Day

LAWRENCE COUNTY - SEPTEMBER 21, 2022 - Lawrence Circuit Court Judge Nathan G. Nikirk and Jim Pittman with the Bedford Noon Lions Club recently visited Oolitic Middle School, Bedford Middle School, St. Vincent De Paul, and the Lawrence County Independent School to commemorate Constitution Day.

In 2004, Senator Robert Byrd added an amendment to the federal spending bill mandating that all educational institutions receiving federal funds offer Constitution Day programming on or about September 17th each year. The Indiana Supreme Court began offering Constitution Day school programming in 2005 and encourages judges to participate across the state.

The Bedford Noon Lions Club provided over 350 8th graders with a pocket copy of the U.S. Constitution.

“I was very impressed with the questions and responses from students. As a former social studies teacher, I really enjoy getting back into the classroom to teach about the Revolutionary War, the United States Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.” Judge Nikirk.

Any teacher or principal interested in hosting an event in 2023 should contact the Bedford Noon Lions Club or the Lawrence Circuit Court.
