Last Day to register to vote April 4th - Election Coverage Begins Soon

LAWRENCE COUNTY - The deadline for people to sign up to register to vote is April 3rd, 2023, by 11:59 p.m.



People can register to vote online at https://indianavoters.in.gov/ .


The Lawrence County Zephyr will start election coverage the week of April 10th for all contested races in the May Primary.


The only contested race in the May Primary for the City of Bedford is the At-Large city council seats with Dan Bortner, and Angel Hawkins seeking another term. Heath Hawkins, who also serves as the Lawrence County Republican Party Chairman is seeking to defeat one of the two incumbents.


The only contested race in the May Primary for the Town of Oolitic races is for Clerk/Treasurer. Annette Norrick, current Clerk/Treasurer Republican candidate is being challenged by Nicole Stout for her seat.


In Mitchell four candidates have filed for the City of Mitchell Mayor race.


Because Eugen Terrell Jr. the only Democrat candidate in the primary and has already won his nomination will not be interviewed for this portion of the coverage.


There are three Republican candidates are seeking to be the next City of Mitchell Mayor. Nathan Jenkins, current Mayor of Mitchell is seeking another term after being appointed to the office, following the resignation of J.D. England who went to work for National Water Company.


Jenkins is being challenged by Vicky Schlegel and Don Caudell Jr. in this year's primary election.


Three Republicans have filed for the Mitchell City Council District # 3 seat which include incumbent Perry Reynolds. Former Mitchell Mayor Dan Terrell, who also sought the Republican nomination for Mayor, following England's resignation is being challenged by Tammy Dwyer for the district 3 seat. The winner between Reynolds, Terrell, or Dwyer will face off with former District # 3 Councilman Joey Slone in the November election.


The Mitchell At - Large seats have Incumbent George James facing off with William Erdle for the Republican nomination.


Each candidate will be given four to five questions and be given the opportunity to respond to those questions.


The questions will be sent out next week with the Lawrence County Zephyr featuring the candidates April 10th.
