Homeless man found guilty on firearms in a jury trial this week in Lawrence County

BEDFORD – On December 7 th , 2023, Steven Boruff was found guilty and convicted of one Count of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Serious Violent Felon, a Level 4 Felony following a two-day jury trial. Steven Boruff will be sentenced by The Honorable Judge John Plummer III of Superior Court I on January 2 nd , 2024.



“We respect the verdict from the Jury and appreciate their service to our community. We thank the Bedford Police Department for their hard work in helping to keep Bedford and Lawrence County safe. Sgt. Faheem Bade’s attention to detail was essential in locating the firearm and getting it off the street.” said Chief Deputy Prosecutor Joshua Scherschel.


Deputy Prosecutor Sarah Cummings stated: “We thank the Bedford City Police Department for their diligent pursuit of individuals who are violating the law. We also want to thank the Jury for their hard work and dedication to seeking justice.”


“We agree with the Jury’s decision in finding Mr. Boruff guilty. I thank them for their time and efforts in this jury trial. I also want to thank the Bedford Police Department and Sgt. Bade for their hard work and dedication to keeping the Bedford community safe.” said Prosecuting Attorney Samuel C. Arp II.


Boruff was arrested in June of this year after Bedford Police received a report of an intoxicated couple in a van at a business in the 2900 block of Mitchell Road.


Police found 41 -year old Steve Boruff in the drivers seat and was homless at the time of his arrest.


Boruff's mother died the week of his arrest and was evicted from the apartment he was living. Boruff was living in his van for four days.


During the search of the vehicle Bedford Police located a smoking device that tested positive for meth and a Bersa Thunder 380 handgun that had a round in the chamber and six rounds in the magazine. In addition other drug and drug parahernalia was located.
