Firefighters Battle Wildland Fire Near Huron Wedenseday Afternoon on U.S. 50 West

HURON - FEBRUARY - 22, 2023 - Firefighters from multiple fire departments responded to a wildland fire near Felknor Road on Wednesday afternoon.

The call reporting the fire came in at 5:03 pm on Wednesday afternoon according to Bill Kinser Fire Chief Huron Volunteer Fire Department.

Additional assistance was requested from Indian Creek Township, Marion Township and the U.S. Forestry Service in fighting the fire. Approximately forty firefighters helped get the fire under control.

Strong winds made fighting the fire difficult. However, the winds helped get the fire under control in the end according to Huron Fire Chief Bill Kinser.

Kinser stated the fire was stopped with about one acre burning. A neighbor burning trash across the street caused this afternoon's blaze. This fire was in the same location as a previous fire last weekend that was caused by a transformer and powerline fire.

One lane of U.S. 50 West at Felknor Road had to be closed while fire equipment parked in the travel portion of the busy highway. The Lawrence County Sheriff's Department sent officers to help direct motorists around the fire scene.

No injuries were reported while firefighters fought the fire. Daviess/Martin County REMC is being contacted about downing a tree that caught fire and is in danger of falling on the nearby power lines.

Firefighters are expected to be on the scene several more minutes while crews build a fire line around the perimeter around the fire, and work to extinguish spot fires that have rekindled in the area.

As Indian Creek Township left the fire scene on U.S. 50 west, the department was dispatched to a large wildland fire on Low Gap Road in Martin County. At this time there is no further information on that fire.
