Bedford firefighters respond to 26th and I Streets for a house fire taking several hours to extinguish

BEDFORD - FEBRUARY, 4,2024 - Bedford firefighters from all three fire stations responded to a house fire at 5:13 pm Sunday evening located at 2604 South I Street.



According to property records the home was owned by Adam Cheesman, however the home was being rented out at the time of the fire.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and fire conditions. At the time they arrived they was not sure whether anyone was inside the residence.


The Headquarters fire station was just a few blocks away and arrived within a few minutes, as fire crews started working right away to get the fire out.



Firefighters were concerned about someone being inside the home as a vehicle was located under a carport.


However, about two hours later a female renting the home arrived to talk to fire officials. At the time of this news story there were no injuries reported.

Extra firefighters were called in from other shifts to help with the firefighting efforts and cover any other emergency in the City of Bedford.



Bedford Police responded to provide traffic control. Firefighters used two handlines and a deck gun off a fire engine on the flames. Two supply lines were hooked into the fire hydrant to supply the fire engines with several thousand gallons of water used.



Bedford fire officials was not able to provide any information on what caused the fire, the fire crews was still working to get the fire out two hours after they were first alerted.



Sunday nights fire would make the third structure fire in Lawrence County within a 12 hour period.



This includes a mobile home fire on Meridian Road early Sunday morning and at the same time a garage fire in the 1700 block of Meridian Road. ( Story coming to Lawrence County Zephyr)
