Arrest made in Fatal Hit and Run Crash in Seymour

SEYMOUR - APRIL 3, 2023 - On March 24, 2023, at approximately 10:46 PM, the Seymour Police Department received a report of an unconscious person lying in the roadway in the 600 block of South Vine Street. When patrol officers arrived in the area, they located a male victim with no signs of life. Patrol officers began life saving measures until Jackson County EMS and the Seymour Fire Department arrived. A very short time later, another 911 call came in where an individual stated that she and her father had been hit by a vehicle. It was determined that the father and daughter were crossing the street when they were hit by a vehicle. The vehicle left the scene without stopping.



The father and daughter were both transported from the scene to Schenck Medical Center. The father was later pronounced dead. The daughter was treated for injuries to her face, hand, and leg. The deceased is identified as Charles M. Layman age 73 of Seymour, Indiana. The daughter is identified as Tiffany M. Brewer age 33 of Seymour, Indiana.


On April 2, 2023, and April 3, 2023, investigators received information on who the driver of the vehicle that left the scene of the fatality crash was. Investigators also received information about where the suspect vehicle possibly was.


Later in the day on April 3, 2023, investigators conducted an interview with the suspect along with his attorney. Investigators arrested Tre Xavier Vires age 28 of Columbus, Indiana for leaving the scene of a fatal crash resulting in death a level 4 felony and leaving the scene of a personal injury crash resulting in catastrophic injury a level 4 felony. Vires was transported to the Jackson County Jail and remanded into the custody of the jail division.


On April 3, 2023, investigators obtained a Jackson Superior Court 1 Search Warrant for a residence on Emma Drive in Seymour to look for the vehicle Vires was operating at the time of the crash. When the search warrant was executed, investigators located a blue 2010 Honda Civic registered to Vires in the garage. The vehicle had extensive front end damage. The investigation is still active.
