After more than four years and INDOT grant Beech Street Round About start date unknown

BEDFORD - AUGUST 16, 2023 - The Bedford Development Commission committed more than $600,000 for a proposed Round About at the intersection of John Williams Boulevard intersection almost four years ago. The city committing about $500,000 to the project until the city went for the Community Crossings funding.

At the time the cost of the project was estimated at $1.6 million and the city applying for a Community Crossing grant to help pay for the cost of the project. The project is expected to be 90 percent funded by the INDOT and the Lawrence County Commissioners deeded some property to the City of Bedford to move the project forward.

Bedford residents are expressing concerns with the planned development just to the west of the intersection, questioning when the project will get started.

The Lawrence County Zephyr asked Bedford Mayor Sam Craig about when the project will start, in which he stated that that has yet to be determined.

However, an environmental document for the project was released on July 25, 2023 and can be viewed on the City of Bedford website.

The Bedford RDC still has the project as one of several projects the members support.

A stoplight being placed at the intersection was discouraged by Bedford Police Chief Terry Moore. A fatal accident in 2019 prompted city officials to look at reconfiguring the intersection.
