Woman Dies in Apartment Fire in Washington Indiana Friday morning

WASHINGTON - FEBRUARY 17, 2023 - A woman died in a apartment fire at 9 NE Third Street in Washington Friday morning.


The 911 call reporting the fire came in at 8:18 am with Washington Fire Department, Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department, Vincennes Fire Department responding to the blaze.


Fire officials have not released the name of the fire victim at this time, pending notification of family members. Other occupants of the apartments were brought out safely.


Apartments were located on the second and third floor of the building. The woman was located on the lower level of the apartment building.


The location held the former Hideaway Tavern.


Firefighters remained on scene throughout most of the day on Friday making sure the fire did not rekindle.

The American Red Cross was assisting some of the occupants of the building.


The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Washington Fire Department and Indiana State Fire Marshal's Office.


Smoke could be seen billowing out of the structure when firefighters arrived, the fire station was just a few blocks to south of the location of the fire.
