Washington County Sheriff's Department Investigate Fatal Crash

WASHINGTON COUNTY - AUDGUST 14, 2022 - On Friday, August 12, 2022, at approximately 7:40 pm, deputies from the Washington County Sheriffs Department and other emergency services responded to the area of 3527 Wetzel Road, Palmyra Indiana, in reference to a motor vehicle crash involving a pickup truck and a motorcycle.



Deputies arrived on the scene and observed a 1998 Ford F-150 in the eastbound lane, sideways in the roadway and partially in a driveway and a 1979 Harley Davidson laying in the middle of the roadway. The driver of the pickup truck was identified as Melissa Coyle, age 50 of Pekin. The driver of the motorcycle was identified as Kyle Whitlow, age 39 of Laconia.


Evidence at the scene indicated that Coyle was traveling westbound on Wetzel Road and was attempting to make a left hand turn into a driveway, when Whitlow, who was traveling eastbound on Wetzel Road came over a hill-crest and collided with the passenger side of Coyle’s pickup truck.


Whitlow was transported to Saint Vincent Hospital in Salem, where he was pronounced deceased. A nine year old female passenger in Coyle’s pickup truck was also transported to Saint Vincent Hospital in Salem, where she was treated for minor injuries. Coyle was not injured.


The Indiana State Police were called to the scene to assist with reconstructing the accident.


Deputy Dawson Easterday is the investigating officer and was assisted by the Indiana State Police, Washington County Ambulance Service, Jackson Township Volunteer Fire Department, Air EVAC Unit 17, Sgt. Matt Hein, Deputy Hailee Lopotosky, Chief Deputy Brad Shepherd and Sheriff Brent Miller.
