Suspect taken to hospital following police pursuit ended with traffic crash on 5th Street Monday

BEDFORD - NOVEMBER 27, 2023 - The suspect in a high speed police pursuit which started in the area of 6 1/2 Street and R Street Monday afternoon was taken to IU Health Bedford for evaluation.

The pursuit ended in a two-car collision in front of Hometown IGA in the 500 block of 5th Street.

The driver of the other vehicle was not injured during the incident.

Witnesses tell the Lawrence County Zephyr the suspect was held at gun point until he was placed in custody by officers of Bedford Police Department.

The incident started around 1:15 pm Monday with several Bedford Police officers responding.

According to witness accounts the police pursuit; the suspect fled Bedford Police Department in his vehicle in the area of R Street and 6th 1/2 streets.

The pursuit continued at high rate of speed eastbound on 5th Street before ending in the collision at the intersection of M Street. The suspect vehicle landing several feet of the interection of 5th and M Street.

A vehicle going northbound on M Street pullied out on to 5th Street and was struck by the suspect's vehicle, ending the pursuit in the traffic crash.

The crash could be heard for several blocks and had many residents and customers concerned. Some customers yelling obsenities at the suspect while handcuffed at the scene.

Both vehicles suffered major front -end damage and had to be towed from the scene. At this time it is not known why the Bedford Police was trying to stop the vehicle.

There are reports by the witness accounts that they are other vehicles involved and damaged, however this information has not been confirmed.

Bedford Police, Bedford Fire ,IU Lifeline Ambulance, Mikels Towing and Stone City Collision assisted at the scene.
