Springville man dies in motorcycle accident on Tunnelton Road Thursday morning

BEDFORD - FEBRUARY 12, 2024 - On Thursday February 8th at 11:53 am the Lawrence County Sheriff's Department received a 911 call reporting a single vehicle motorcycle accident on Tunnelton Road approximately 900 feet north of Pinhook Road.

The investigation revealed that a 2018 Harvey Davidson operated by Robert Taylor age 52, Springville was northbound on Tunnelton Road in a long straight away. Taylor and a rider of a second motorcycle had just left a residence approximately 1000 feet south of the crash location.

For unknown reasons, Taylor motorcycle left the roadway on the right east side. The motorcycle continued northbound, just off the edge of the roadway. There were numerous scuff marks and gouges in the pavement where the motorcycle left footboard was dragging on the slightly raised asphalt.

After approximately 159 feet off the edge of the roadway, the motorcycle struck a large tree, causing Taylor to be ejected from the motorcycle. After impact with the tree, the motorcycle traveled another 44 feet before coming to rest in the middle of the northbound lane of Tunnelton Road.

The other motorcycle was in front of Taylor and did not see the crash. He heard it, but by the time he looked back, Taylor had already been ejected and the motorcycle was sliding to a stop. He immediately turned around and rendered aid to Taylor, as did passing motorists. Unfortunately, Taylor suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased after being transported by IU Lifeline Ambulance to IU Health Bedford.
