Seymour woman rescued from bridge then arrested for trespassing

SEYMOUR - FEBRUARY 3, 2024 - On Saturday, February 3, 2024, emergency services were dispatched to the new bridge on the South Burkart Blvd extension in reference to subject(s) on the wrong side of the guardrails.

While en route, it was reported that an individual had possibly fallen off. Upon our arrival, it was discovered that this individual, identified as Rachel Adams, age 33 of Seymour, IN, had climbed over the guardrails and walked along the edge of the bridge.

Adams continued on the edge to the steepest point at which the guardrail transitions into tall fencing, where she then scaled down a several foot drop onto a narrow ledge, unable to climb back up without being at serious risk of an approximately 40 foot fall. With Jackson County EMS on standby, personnel with the Seymour Fire Department drove down a gravel road alongside the L & I railroad tracks where they deployed Ladder 3 from below.

Seymour Fire Department was able to safely secure Adams using their equipment and walked her down their Fire Ladder. All the while, Seymour Dispatch contacted L & I Railroad and notified them in order to delay an oncoming train.

Once Adams was safely on the ground, she was placed under arrest for Criminal Trespass. Seymour Police Department remind residents "please exercise caution and common sense when using our new pedestrian pathway over the bridge.

The multiple layers of guardrails, fencing, and “Do Not Cross Guardrail” signs are there for your safety and the safety of the first responders who are put at risk responding to situations such as this,"
