Updated: Pleasant Run Township Fire Coverage is Being Provided By Marshall And Shawswick VFDs

HELTONVILLE - (APRIL 24, 2022) - Pleasant Run Township fire coverage is being supplemented by both Marshall and Shawswick Township Volunteer Fire Departments.

The Pleasant Run Township Fire Board has terminated the volunteer firefighters leaving only a Fire Chief Darin Kinser according to sources to the Lawrence County Zephyr.

Pleasant Run Volunteer Fire Chief Darin Kinser released the following statement.

"The Pleasant Run Fire Department will continue to serve the people of Pleasant Run Township with Fire Protection and EMS services that we began serving more than 60 years ago.

We will continue to look for individuals ready to serve their community in the fire service.

We will work with our school systems and discuss options with students on the benefits of becoming a Junior Firefighter that will give them the opportunity to earn their Fire training certifications while attending high school and also give them the opportunity to attend Ivy Tech for a 2 year degree provided by a scholarship through the State of Indiana, Ivy Tech and the IVFA.

We are more than just a fire department we are a beginning to a pathway of success through education for young students looking to begin their journey after high school but don’t know where that journey may begin. We want to help these young students complete there journey and become successful men and women of their communities and that will be one of our missions at Pleasant Run Fire Dept.

We currently have 4 active members on our roster and looking to recruit more members.

I also wanted to mention we are currently in planning stages of a new fundraiser for the fire department that we believe the community will be excited for and we also look forward to having our fish fry’s soon as we continue to prepare for our fundraiser events this year.

If you are interested in volunteering or need more information about the Fire Scholarship please reach out to me at 812-276-9240 or visit https://www.ivytech.edu/32579.html for more information," said Kinser in the release.

The Pleasant Run Township VFD was dispatched to a motor vehicle accident on State Road 446 near Henderson Creek Road on Saturday afternoon. However, both the Marshall and Shawswick Volunteer Fire Departments were also dispatched to this emergency scene.

Lawrence County volunteer fire department have been facing staffing issues for the last couple of years. The Guthrie Township Volunteer Fire Department was disbanded after former Guthrie Township Trustee Robert Awbrey did not renew the contract with that fire department.

The Williams Volunteer Fire Department disbanded after a staffing level of only four firefighters in 2019. The department also failed to report to the State of Indiana Secretary of State and was ordered disbanded.

Recently, Shawswick Township Volunteer Fire Department has created a fire territory with Guthrie Township to provide fire protection 24/7 along with a county ambulance service.
