North Lawrence Community Schools to Remove 11 School Buses to go to junk pile

BEDFORD - JULY 21, 2023 - The North Lawrence Community School board voted on removing 11 School buses from their fleet during the school board meeting Thursday night.

According to Duane Boady some may even have to be towed to Bedford Recycling for disposal. The buses no longer can be repaired or met the lifespan as required by Indiana State law.


At this time it is not known whether the school corporation will have to purchase more school buses for the corporation.


In other business:


  • The school board approved the 2023-2024 course fees for students. Many of the fees have been discontinued except for some of the fees required for elective classes and college courses offered by the high school.


The Indiana State legislatures with more the a $61 billion budget surplus have finally come to the modern age in providing free text books to Indiana students.


In the Indiana Legislature the General Assembly passed House Bill 1216 which will require each public school to provide curricular materials and books at no cost to each student enrolled in the public school.


Each student in NLCS will not be charged for curricular materials which include text books, ipads, and Chromebooks.


The State of Indiana have allocated $160 million to be reimburse the school corporations across the state for those costs. At this time, it is not known how much NLCS will be compensated for.


  • Approved 8 staff members to attend the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics Annual & Expo in Washington D.C. Wednesday October 28th

  • Approved MOU with Hoosier Uplands Head Start program for kindegarten screening

  • Approved the second reading of the Wellness policy for the school corporation. This is in accordance with NOLA guidelines and places the 14 school principals in charge of policies and procedures for their buildings

  • Update given to the board on their summer schools held in June and July with 750 students taking part in this years programs. 58 percent of the 3rd grade students who retested on the ILEARN testing passed the exam

  • Revised the agreement with Five Star in their IT contracts with a reduction and revision to their contract. The school corporation now pays $4,195 a month, with the contract agreement from 2022 - 2027.

  • Approved the 2023 -2024 replacement fees for Chromebook devices with some of the work performed by students at the high school as part of a course offering

  • Approved a MOU with Ivy Tech regarding the Dual Credit for BNLHS students

North Lawrence Community School Superintendent Kevin Yancey


NLCS Supt. Kevin Yancey is on his third month at the helm of the school corporation thanked the directors and school board members for their work, and welcoming him to the school corporation.


Yancey comes from the Madison Consolidated Schools who served as teacher, high school principal, and director of facilities and special projects for MCS.



Steve Underwood is the corporation's Assistant Supt. who served as interim assistant Superintendent since February.
