Norman man injured in house fire Thursday afternoon

NORMAN - FEBRUARY 1, 2024 - A Norman man suffered minor burns following a residential fire at 2 Bob Young Road Thursday afternoon.

Several fire departments from Jackson and Lawrence County responded to reports of person trapped in a residential fire at 12:51 pm on Thursday.

The Pleasant Run Township and Shawswick Township Volunteer Fire Departments arrived to find the residence fully involved.

Michael Young's daughter was able to get him out of the residence before the firefighters arrived. Young himself having other medical conditions which made it difficult to get out the home on his own.

Young was transported to IU Health Hospital Bedford, in what was described as minor burns to his back. His daughter treated for smoke inhalation at the scene according to reports from fire officials.

The homeowners were able to get all the dogs out of the residence however they was unsure of whether a cat was able to get out.

A Pleasant Run Township Volunteer firefighter was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

According to firefighters Young was possibly smoking a cigarette while using oxygen when he fell asleep. Young woke up to flames rolling across the ceiling of the home.

The home was a total loss, firefighters were on the scene until about 5:30 pm when the fire rekindled about 7:30 pm.

Firefighters from Brownstown, Carr Township, Owen Township, Pershing, and Salt Creek Township Volunteer Fire Departments in Jackson County responded, and Pleasant Run Township and Shawswick Township Volunteer Fire Departments, IU Lifeline Ambulance from Lawrence County responded to the fire.

Jackson County REMC was contacted to disconnect the electricity to the residence.
