Monroe County Sheriff's Department investigate shooting on Tuesday at Eagle Point

MONROE COUNTY On July 19, 2023, at approximately 3:15am a complainant contacted the Central Dispatch Center to report his daughter, a 31-year-old victim, had been shot in the leg with a rifle by her ex-boyfriend.



The incident occurred between 9 and 9:30pm the previous evening, July 18, 2023, at the victim’s residence at Eagle Pointe, located in Monroe County. Around 10:15pm, the suspect drove the victim to a property on Old Clifty Road, Bloomfield, IN, located in Greene County, while armed with the rifle and a handgun.


Once there, the victim briefly lost consciousness, waking up around 1am, and the suspect drove the victim back to her residence in Monroe County. The victim arrived home around 1:30am, and after being there a short time, drove to her parents’ residence to seek help, which is when law enforcement was notified. The victim was transported to the hospital by ambulance, and her injury is non-life threatening. It was discovered through the investigation that the suspect has a pending case of domestic violence with the same victim, and that there was a no contact order in place.


Detectives with the Sheriff’s Office requested deputies with the Greene County Sheriff’s Department check the address on Old Clifty Road, in an attempt to locate the suspect and secure the property pending a search warrant. A deputy with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the address in Bloomfield, in order to assist Greene County. Once deputies arrived at the property, they located the suspect’s vehicle with a tent set up next to it. Deputies were holding the perimeter when they

saw the male suspect unzip and look out of the window on the tent. Deputies identifies themselves as being with the Sheriff’s Office, and a few seconds later a gunshot was heard coming from the tent, which resulted in a Greene County deputy discharging his patrol rifle towards the tent. Bloomington Police Department’s Critical Incident Response Team was contacted and requested to respond to the address.


Once they arrived, they discovered the suspect deceased inside the tent. The officer involved shooting is being investigated by the Indiana State Police, and any requests regarding that investigation should be directed to them.

OWENSBUERG - JULY 20, 2023 - Detectives from the Indiana State Police have been requested by Greene County Sheriff George Dallaire to investigate an officer-involved shooting incident that took place on July 19, 2023, at approximately 10:00 a.m., at 3936 South Old Clifty Road, Owensburg.

At approximately 10:00 a.m., deputies from the Greene County Sheriff’s Department and a deputy of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department, were attempting to locate a suspect involved in an earlier shooting that had occurred in the overnight hours in Bloomington, Indiana. Deputies were able to locate the suspect's vehicle at 3936 South Old Clifty Road, near a tent. Upon exiting their vehicles, deputies heard a gunshot fired from the tent and they immediately took cover. A Greene County deputy then fired his department service rifle, towards the tent from which the gunshot was heard. Bloomington Police Department SWAT team was then activated and made entry into the tent finding a deceased male.


The investigation is being conducted by Indiana State Police detectives, Michael Tummer and Matthew Hatchett, with the assistance of Sergeant Chris Fears, and CSI Sergeants Ian Mathews, David Mill, and Eric Russell of the Bloomington State Police Post.


An autopsy of the deceased male will be conducted on Thursday, July 20th.

All deputies involved in this incident have been placed on administrative leave, which is customary in officer-involved shootings.


The Monroe County Sheriff’s Department is conducting a separate investigation into the shooting in Bloomington.


This is an active and ongoing Indiana State Police investigation. There is no further information to release currently.


Upon completion of their investigation, Indiana State Police detectives will submit a full report of the incident to the Greene County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
