Mitchell man charged in OWI injuring two IU Lifeline EMT's in November Traffic Accident

BEDFORD - JANUARY 1, 2024 - A Mitchell man has been charged with two counts of OWI causing serious bodily injury operating a motor vehicle with a ACE of .08 and one count of Operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person in a November traffic accident injuring two IU Lifeline EMT's.

Michael Jackson, Mitchell, Indiana was traveling westbound on 16th Street at Indiana State Road 37 intersection (southbound lane) in his pickup truck, colliding with a IU Lifeline ambulance that was not on a emergency call.

Michael Jackson is being represented by attorney Carl Salzman who had an initial hearing on November 27, 2023.

Salzman tried to have the initial hearing waived, however Judge Bob Cine denied the motion.

A pre-trial conference is scheduled at 1:00 pm on January 29, 2024 in Lawrence County Lawrence County Superior Court II.

Kayla Henson an EMT with IU Lifeline Ambulance was airlifted to IU Methodist Hospital with serious injuries and is still recovering from the accident.

Rob Ryan an EMT with IU Lifeline ambulance was also airlifted from IU Health Hospital Bedford and has since returned to work.

Previous story: BEDFORD - NOVEMBER 18, 2023 - Bedford Police Department is investigating an accident involving IU Lifeline ambulance and a pick-up truck at 16th Street and Indiana State Road 37.

The southbound lane of Indiana 37 is closed at John Williams Blvd while emergency crews work the accident.

Bedford Fire Department crews performed extrication at the scene. The extircation taking several minutes to free all the accident victims.

The accident was reported around 3:15 am Saturday morning.

Stat Flight and IU Lifeline air ambulance was dispatched to the scene. The helicopter

sarriving about 40 minutes later.

There have been several accidents at this intersection in past couple of weeks.

Bedford Police, Bedford Fire, Indiana State Police, IU Lifeline Ambulance, Stat Flight and IU Lifeline Air ambulance was at the scene.

Ambulance coverage for Lawrence County was provided by other county ambulance and the Lawrence County Fire Territory.
