Man shoots himself following domestic dispute in Mundell Estates

HELTONVILLE - A man shot himself following a domestic dispute at 277 Mundell Estates around 4:30 am Tuesday morning.

At 3:12 am Tuesday morning Lawrence County Sheriff's Department responded to the location on a report that Ronald Rice was in domestic dispute with a woman and wouldn't let her go.

Emergency medical personnel was called to treat Rice for a leg injury. The emergency personnel treated Rice for his injuries but refused to go the hospital. The emergency medical personnel then left the scene.

Lawrence County Sheriff deputies Bailey Duprey and Clifford Pruett secured a search warrant to seize several weapons that were in the home.

Rice was being detained on charges of domestic battery, strangulation, and criminal confinement.

According to reports Deputy Duprey followed Rice back into his residence and Rice then grabbed a Rutger 45 revolver from the back of his shirt and shot the back of his head with the bullet grazing his skull.

Personnel from IU Lifeline ambulance, Pleasant Run Volunteer Fire Department, along with Oolitic Marshal's Office, and Mitchell Police Department immediately responded to assist the Lawrence County Sheriff's Department.

Rice was transported to IU Health Bloomington Hospital by ambulance for his injuries.

Rice is expected to be formally charged after he released from the hospital. Domestic violence incidents are very dangerous to law enforcement. There were no injuries to any law enforcement personnel.
