Man arrested following vehicle pursuit with Monroe County Sheriff's Department

MONROE COUNTY - OCTOBER 14, 2023 - On October 13, 2023 at approximately 04:00 AM, Deputies with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office conducted a warrant service at 8711 E. Midview Drive Unionville, IN for Matthew Fischman, 37.


Mr. Fischman had active warrants for misdemeanor theft in Monroe County and misdemeanor resisting law enforcement in Marion County.

As Deputies were arriving in the area, they observed Mr. Fischman in a vehicle on Southshore Drive.

Deputies attempted to initiate a traffic stop when Mr. Fischman refused to stop and a pursuit ensued.

The pursuit traveled into Brown County along Southshore Drive and came back into Monroe County on E. State Road 45.

During a planned PIT maneuver, Mr. Fischman abruptly turned onto Shuffle Creek Road from E State Road 45, as a result one squad car sustained minor damage. As Mr. Fischman was turning onto Southshore Drive from Shuffle Creek Road, he swung too wide and had to back up to complete his turn. As he was rapidly accelerating in reverse, he struck two additional squad cars. At this time Mr. Fischman’s vehicle became disabled, he escaped

through a window and began swimming away in Lake Lemon.

Deputies immediately called for Monroe Fire Protection District’s boat for a water retrieval as Mr. Fischman tried to swim away. In the mean time, Deputies constructed a throwing device for Mr. Fischman as he began to exhibit signs of struggling in the water and he was rescued to the shore.

Mr. Fischman was medically evaluated and remanded into the Monroe County Correctional Center on the following charges:

1. Battery By Means of a Deadly Weapon - Level 5 Felony

2. Two Counts Resisting Law Enforcement w/ Vehicle - Level 5 Felony

3. Resisting Law Enforcement - Class A Misdemeanor

4. Driving While Suspended - Class A Misdemeanor

5. Leaving the Scene of an Accident - Class B Misdemeanor

6. Reckless Driving - Class C Misdemeanor

7. Two warrants Monroe and Marion County

One additional squad car received damage from a deer during the pursuit for a total of four squad cars that sustained damaged.

All damage was minor and there were no injuries from any involved party reported.
