LAWRENCE COUNTY - DECEMBER 30,2022 - Lawrence County Zephyr top seven out of twelve top stories. On Saturday, Lawrence County Zephyr will have 2022 Photo's in review and have 2022 Business Headlines.


Here is a look at the Top Seven out of Twelve Top Stories in 2022:


#7 - MAY 10, 2022 - During the Bedford Planning Commission meeting, Monday afternoon; Bedford Plan Director Brandon Woodward announced that Ollies is going into the former JC Penny's building located on James Avenue.


The retailer is working on preparing the building and permits from the state before being able to open up the facility. No timeline has been given on an opening date.


Ollies is coming to Bedford - The former JC Penny's on James Avenue future home of the retailer


Ollies's is America's largest retailers of closeout merchandise and excess inventory. There are over 439 stores located throughout the United States.


Preparations continue for the Marshall Store to open - Located in the 2600 block 16th Street


Most of the merchandise comes direct from the finest manufacturers in the country and abroad.


Woodward also reported that Marshall's is getting the building prepared for their opening, which will be located in the 2600 block 16th Street. The store will open up next to the Tractor Supply Store. There is no word when their grand opening with be.


Marshall's is an American chain of off-price department stores owned by TJX Companies. The store sells, clothing, footwear, bedding, furniture, jewelry, and beauty products.


#8 - Firefighters Battle Christmas Eve Fire on Todd Lane


DECEMBER 24, 2022 - Several fire departments are on the scene of a structure fire in the 800 block of Todd Lane. The home was owned by Rob and Jesse Corbin who also has three children.

The 911 call reporting the fire came in at 4:52 a.m. with firefighters from Pleasant Run Township, Shawswick Township. and Marshall Township reporting the house fire and couple of vehicles on fire.



The occupants from the home was able to make it out, of the home. However, some of the occupants were evaluated at IU Health hospital in Bedford.


There was a request for additional tanker were made around 5:15 from Indian Creek, Perry, Marion Township and Oolitiic Volunteer Fire Departments in Lawrence County and Owen Township in Jackson County were made.


" We had a difficult time of keeping fire hoses and nozzles from freezing. Over15,000 gallons of water were used to fight the fire. However, the fire hoses and nozzles kept freezing. Oolitic brought us additional hose lines and a nozzle to help us," said Darin Kiner Fire Chief Pleasant Run Volunteer Fire Department.


The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.



No other information is available at this time.


Lawrence County Sheriff's Department and IU Health is standing by at the scene.

# 9 - Emergency Personnel Respond to Lake Monroe on Search & Rescue


JUNE 16, 2022 - Emergency Personnel are on the scene of a Search & Rescue Operation at Lake Monroe.

The incident was reported at 5:18 p.m. with a person who fell into the water. The original person was located, however a second person who attempted the rescue is now missing.


The area where the efforts are being focused on is around the Hardin Ridge of the lake.



Several emergency personnel are on the scene at both Fairfax Beach and Hardin Ridge area of Lake Monroe.


Monroe Fire Protection District Marine Unit, Monroe County Sheriff's Department Dive Team, Indiana State Police Dive Team, Indiana Conservations Department, and IU Lifeline Ambulance Service Bloomington are on the scene at this time.



Lawrence County Zephyr will update this developing story when more information becomes available.


#10 - ACCIDENT AT INDIANA STATE ROAD 37 AND INDIANA STATE ROAD 60 WEST WITH TRUCK CARRYING EXPLOSIVES


October 3, 2022 - Updated: Indiana State Road 37 is reopened following a traffic accident at the intersection of Indiana State Road 60 west and Indiana State Road 37 Monday afternoon.



A vehicle traveling southbound Indiana State Road 37 struck a truck carrying explosives of unknown type going through the intersection; the truck traveling eastbound on Indiana State Road 60 West.


IU Lifeline ground ambulance departs with an accident victim to a local hospital


An evacuation of 5,000 feet perimeter was maintained by emergency personnel. Firefighters had trouble with motorists going around the restricted area trying to get to Auto Parts Stores, Grecos Pizza and other businesses during the evacuation and emergency.



This caused a massive traffic problem as the traffic was rerouted onto Teke Burton Drive in Mitchell.


The accident was reported at 4:10 p.m.


One of the accident victims was going to be airlifted to a trauma center according to officials at the scene. A detailed accident report is not yet, available by the Mitchell Police Department. The driver of the truck refused further medical treatment at the scene.


Indiana State Road 37 was closed for at until 7:00 p.m. until Indiana State Police EOD team could determine it was safe.


Firefighters from Mitchell Volunteer Fire Department, Marion Township Volunteer Fire Department, Huron Volunteer Fire Department, IU Lifeline ground ambulance, Stat Flight helicopter, Indiana State Police EOD, Mikels Towing and Jackson's Heavy Haul responded to the accident scene.


Orange County Rural District II Fire Department provided EMS coverage for the City of Mitchell while their personnel were busy at the accident scene.


This would make the second accident at the intersection in the last 26 hours.


Original story: A traffic accident at State Road 37 has closed traffic in the area.



The accident involved a truck has truck carrying explosives and an evacuation of the immediate area is underway.


We will update this story at. later time. One accident is being airlifted from the scene.


#11 - MITCHELL POLICE DEPARTMENT INVESTIGATE PERSON WITH GUN SHOT WOUND

DECEMBER 17, 2022 - Mitchell Police Department is investigating a person with a gunshot wound to his abdomen in the parking lot of Ol Reiley's in Mitchell.



The incident was reported just after 2:00 a.m. Saturday morning.


A 21-year-old Aydan Hayes was transported from the scene to a landing zone at the Mitchell Industrial Park.


Stat-Flight helicopter will be transported Hayes to University of Louisville Hospital for his injuries.


According to reports this was an accidental discharge of a firearm.


Adyan had a flat tire, and after the tire was fixed went to his friend's jeep, and the holster was around his chest. When he was getting out of the jeep the gun discharged in the holster. His family advises he should fully recover from his injuries.


Mitchell Police Department was not available for any comment.


The circumstances surrounding the incident is unclear.


Mitchell Police, Lawrence County Sheriff's Department, Mitchell Volunteer Fire Department, IU Lifeline Ambulance and Stat-Flight helicopter have been dispatched to the scene.

#12 - TWO AIRLIFTED TO HOSPITAL FOLLOWING A SINGLE VEHICLE ACCIDENT ON U.S. 50 EAST


DECEMBER 3, 2022 - Two people were airlifted following a single vehicle traffic accident on U.S. 50 East near Stove Road Saturday afternoon.



The call reporting the accident came in around 4:10 p.m.


Reports that the vehicle rolled several times before coming to a rest. The passenger vehicle was traveling westbound on U.S. 50 East at this time there is no details on why the vehicle left the roadway.


A mailbox was struck during the crash.


Emergency personnel at the scene requested two air ambulances to transport the accident victims from a landing zone at Shaswisck Elementary school to trauma centers in Indianapolis and Louisville.



Stat-Flight air ambulance transported one of the victims to an Indianapolis Hospital and the second air ambulance transporting the second to a Louisville hospital.


Bedford Fire Department, Shawswick Volunteer Fire Department, IU Lifeline responded with two ambulances, Lawrence County Sheriff's Department and Mikels Towing responded to the accident scene.


Lawrence County Sheriff's Department continues to investigate the accident.
