Indiana State Police will lead death investigation in Mitchell

MITCHELL - SEPTEMBER 26, 2023 - Update



 

ISP BLOOMINGTON DETECTIVES CONDUCT DEATH INVESTIGATION

Mitchell, IN – On Tuesday afternoon, Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators from the Indiana State Police assisted with the investigation into the deaths of two children in a Mitchell home.

At approximately 4 p.m. at the request of the Mitchell Police Department, Bloomington Post detectives responded to 1211 Brook Street to investigate the deaths of a male child, Age 3, and a female child, Age 1. A female subject, identified as Brittany Medina, 33, has been arrested for two counts of murder. 

The Lawrence County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene and transported the bodies from Mitchell to Bedford. Autopsies have been scheduled. Detectives are working with the Lawrence County Prosecutor’s Office, and the case remains under investigation.


 All criminal defendants are to be presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

The 911 call reporting the incident came in to Lawrence County Central dispatch at 4:16 pm Tuesday afternoon. The Mitchell Police Department, Mitchell Fire Department, and IU Lifeline Ambulance responded initially to the call.

Details of the incident have not been released by the Mitchell Police Department or the cause and manner of death. Mitchell Troy Lobosky says he will release information to the Lawrence County Zephyr later this evening.

Indiana State Police crime scene investigators started arriving just before 6:00 pm with crime scene tape covering West Brook Street between 12th and 13th Street and 13th Street closed at Brook Street between West Oak.



In addition to the Indiana State Police, Lawrence County Prosecutors Samuel Arp II, and Lawrence County Death Investigator Robert Herr, is assisting in the investigation.



Lawrence County Zephyr will provide more information when it becomes available.
