In a 4-2 Vote NLCS Board to allow middle school students to play football and marching band

Updated: Aug 19, 2023

BEDFORD - AUGUST 18, 2023 - Correction to original story Barbra Miller and Kristen Collier casting no votes.

The North Lawrence Community School board voted 4-2 to allow middle school students from other schools to take part in football and marching band programs in NLCS.

NLCS board member Tracy Bailey was not in attendance; Kristen Collier and Barbra Miller casting the dissenting votes.

The motion to allow only the two programs came after school board member Adam Parsley stated the board on who would be responsible for monitoring whether a student had disciplinary, or grades were efficient.

At this time there is only one student in the football program at Bedford Middle School and unknown if any taking part in the marching band program.

" We did not have a chance to look over this proposal, and we should have been notified sooner," said Collier following her "No" vote.

The original motion was to allow middle-school students from other schools to take part in Football, Swimming, Wrestling, and Color Guard until school board member Adam Parsley requested an amended motion.

However, school members became confused on what they were voting on and the final motion were only for the two programs.

The idea is to help with good will among the two charter schools and other schools as students transition into Bedford North Lawrence High School. None of the county charter schools have a high school.

North Lawrence Community School board voted to close the two western elementary schools in 2020.

The school board will want policies in place before voting on the other sports programs.
