May 1st was a free fishing day without a permit and free gate admission all day at the Indiana State Parks.

Back in March, more than 700 rainbow trout was released in the lake at Spring Mill which averaged 10-11 inches and weighed approximately one pound.

Colin Campbell was asked by the Lawrence County Zephyr whether he was having a good day of fishing and whether he caught any. " No, it has not been a very good, day for fishing. But a very nice day to try, said Colin Campbell of Danville, Indiana.

Within minutes of making that comment he caught a nice trout, reeling it in from the bridge at the lake.

Many took to the water at Spring Mill State Park on Sunday

On Sunday, several families took advantage of the day to fish, boat, hike, picnic and just tour many of the attractions of Spring Mill State Park.

The park offers many historic and natural wonders. From the water fed grist mill and the Spring Mill village represents what it was like in the pioneer days.

The grist mill itself was first constructed in 1817, and the CCC project restored the village in and around 1920 -1930.

Donaldson Cave is an excellent place to cool off and explore a cave.

For those who love biking or hiking with 7 walking trails and a Mountain bike trail for those who love to get in some healthy exercise.

Lawrence County has the benefit of being close to Monroe Lake, Paynetown Campground and Fairfax Beach just less than 30 minutes away.
