FIREFIGHTERS RESCUE MAN AT FREE SPIRIT CAMPGROUND MONDAY AFTERNOON

BEDFORD - DECEMBER 19, 2022 - Firefighters rescue a man from a bucket truck at the Free Spirit Campground Monday afternoon. The campground is on Erie Church Road and Indiana State Road 446 on Lawrence County's east side.



This was after the hydraulic line from the bucket truck malfunctioned. No one was injured in the incident.


The call reporting the incident came in at 1:13 p.m. to Lawrence County Central Dispatch.

The owner of the Free Spirit Campground Mike Price was cutting limbs around the campground when the incident occurred.


Firefighters raise the ladder


Firefighters from the Shawswick Volunteer Fire Department responded, and requested the assistance of the Bedford Fire Department with their ladder truck. However, at the time Bedford Fire Department Ladder 1 was unavailable due to regular maintenance of the Ladder Truck.



Shawswick Fire Chief Bobby Brown then requested Ladder 57 of the Marion Township Volunteer Fire Department which was able to send firefighters who then made the rescue.


Overall, the firefighters took over one hour to perform the rescue, by the time the Ladder Truck from Marion Township to arrive.


Shawswick Volunteer Fire Department responded with a Squad, Engine and Tanker with six firefighters, and Marion Township responding with a Ladder Truck and four firefighters.

Local firefighters are being trained in High Angle Rescues, and Rope Rescues to in case other emergencies arise in the county.


Lawrence County Volunteer firefighters are trained in vehicle extircation, farm rescue, grain bin rescue, emergency medical response from EMR to EMT level of training, in addition to their regular firefighter duties.


Marion Township Volunteer Fire Department purchase of their Ladder Truck have proved its importance in fighting fires and for rescue.
