Family displaced by fire Friday morning on Vinegar Hill Road

BEDFORD - OCTOBER 6, 2023 - A family is trying to determine what to do next after the home they were living in was destroyed by fire Friday morning.

The family just returned home from taking their child to school in Mitchell to find the home fully involved in fire.

The 911 call reporting the fire in the 300 block of Vinegar Hill Road came in at 8:48 am sending firefighters from Shawswick Township, Marion Township, Oolitic Volunteer Fire Departments and Lawrence County Fire Territory Ambulance Service to the scene.

Thick black smoke could be seen billowing from the home when firefighters arrived.

At the time call it was not determined whether anyone one was still inside the residence, however it was soon realized everyone escaped the fire uninjured.

" I am not sure if my dog was able to make it out or not. We had a dog and few cats. The power to the residence was turned on yesterday and now I came home to this. We took my child to school, and thank God he is okay," said Micah Mills occupant of the home with his wife and son.

" The family reported some issues with a breaker box and some lights in the living room that would not come on yesterday. The home was owned by his father, and power was restored to the residence with the last 24 hours, " said Shawswick Township Assistant Fire Chief Keith Brown.

" I do not know what we are going to do next. The clothes we have on is the only thing we have right now. We are not sure what we are going to do next, and not sure how anyone can help us at this time," said Mills

Firefighter were still on the scene at 11:00 am Friday morning. Vinegar Hill Road remain closed while firefighters fought the fire.
