Driver arrested after causing vehicle accident on Mitchell Road

BEDFORD -SEPTEMBER 14, 2023 - A Bedford man was arrested after he failed to yield the right of way and was driving while intoxicated in a two vehicle accident Tuesday night.


Derek Gilbertson, 42, Bedford was driving a 2015 Ford Focus eastbound 20th Street and failed to yield and pulled into the path of Sally Burch who was driving a 2021 Lexus who was traveling southbound on Mitchell Road.



Both vehicles landed on the eastside of Mitchell Road with Burch's going through the fence of Green Hill Cemetery.


Gilbertson was reported intoxicated at the scene and a portable breathalyzer showed a reading at .287 and was transported to IU Health Bedford hospital for a blood draw.



Gilbertson was arrested for driving while intoxicated, operating a vehicle while intoxicated, with endangerment, and Operating while intoxicated with a prior conviction.


Sally Burch was taken by IU Lifeline ambulance non-emergent to IU Health Bedford for injuries from the accident.



The accident reported at 8:03 pm on Tuesday sent emergency crews from Bedford Police, Bedford Fire Department, Indiana State Police, two IU Lifeline Ambulances, and two Stone City Collision wreckers.
