CITY OF BEDFORD TO WITHHOLD DONATION TO WHITE RIVER HUMANE SOCIETY

BEDFORD - NOVEMBER 21, 2022 - The City of Bedford will be withholding their donation to the White River Humane Society until agreements about a city council member serving on their board can be worked out.

Both the Bedford Board of Works and Bedford City Council tabled the agreement between the city and the non-profit agency. Both the Board of Works and City council approved their donation of $37,000 which was a decrease from $50,000 for 2023.

However, the payment to White River Humane Society is on hold until an agreement can be reached between the two parties in how a city council member can actively serve on their boards.

The Bedford City Council has required that any donations to non-profits that a city council member serve on that non-profits board to be able to know how the money is being spent and any questions that may arise between the two parties.

The White River Humane Society says that all board members must work at least 12 hours month, required to attend a certain number of meetings, and contribute to the board.

" We are a working board, " stated Nina Peterson representing the White River Humane Society. " We require our board members to be active board members.

The mayor Craig asked that the two groups sit down along with a couple of city council members and work out the matter.

In the 2023 Budget the city approved over $207,900 to non-profit organizations.

The donations of non-profits in 2023 by the City of Bedford:

  • White River Humane Society - Requested $50,000 approved $37,400

  • Boys & Girls Club - Requested and approved $35,000
