City of Bedford in search for its next Fire Chief following retirement of Chief Hughes on Friday

BEDFORD - AUGUST 9, 2023 - The Bedford Board of Works accepted the retirement of Bedford Fire Chief John Hughes during their special meeting held Wednesday afternoon.

Chief Hughes will officially retire on Friday August 11th after serving 32 years as a Bedford firefighter moving up the ranks and finally as Fire Chief.


" The city wants to thank Chief Hughes for his service, he has done an outstanding job for the city," said Bedford Mayor Sam Craig.


The mayor says there is no timeline in appointing a new fire chief and an acting fire chief has not been named. The mayor says an acting fire chief will be named soon.

" We want to thank Chief Hughes for his 32 years of service to the Bedford Fire Department. He had a great part in the fire prevention programs in our local schools We wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors. Mayor Craig has always treated the fire department good and have confidence in his choice for a new chief," said Dane Fountain President Bedford Firefighters Local # 728.


" The fire department's run volume has increased over this last year, with the increase in emergency medical calls. We trust that the department will get a progressive fire chief," added Fountain.



Bedford Fire Department is just shy of 90 runs from last year and the department has four months to go in the year.


This would make the second Fire Chief in three years, with the resignation of Fire Chief Dewayne Turpin in February 2020.
