Candle Suspected Cause for Structure Fire in Kenray Lake Area

KENRAY LAKE - AUGUST 15, 2022 - A fire left a Bedford family homeless after a citronella candle as the suspected the cause Monday afternoon. The fire started on a porch and spread quickly to the home.



A child who is autistic is suspected of lighting the candle and starting the fire. However, the exact cause still remains under investigation.



The 911 call reporting the fire came in at 4:36 p.m. with firefighters from the Shawswick Township and Pleasant Run Township Volunteer Fire Departments alerted to the initial call.


The address of the fire occurred on 60 Circle Lake Court.



Smoke could be seen billowing from miles away as firefighters tried to reach the scene.



Firefighters from the Marion Township Volunteer Fire Department and Carr Township Volunteer Fire Department in Jackson, County joined forces to help get the fire under control.



Firefighters did not leave the scene until 8:50 p.m. making sure the fire was out and no longer a threat to other properties in the area.



Firefighters fought the fire using tankers, and engines from a nearby hydrant until a water supply could be established from nearby Kenray Lake.


Shawswick Volunteer Fire Department has been working over the year's to fund a way for a dry-hydrant to be used to fill their trucks during a fire such as today.


No one was inured in today's blaze, and IU Lifeline Ambulance Service crews stood by to make sure firefighters were hydrated and monitored while they battled the blaze.


The home itself was a total loss but firefighters were able to keep the blaze from destroying the attached garage.


Jackson County REMC arrived to disconnect the power from the residence. On other information was provided by fire officials.
