Bedford man dead following officer involved shooting on Western Avenue with Bedford Police officers
BEDFORD - SEPTEMBER - 29, 2023 - A Bedford man is dead and three Bedford, Indiana police officers are placed on leave following a officer involved shooting Thursday night.
The three officers names have not been released at this time.
Placing officers on leave is common practice when officers are involved in these types of incidents.
The Bedford Police officers were assisted by officers from the Lawrence County Sheriff's Department, and Oolitic Marshal's office after shots rang out Thursday night.
Two vehicles which included the vehicle the suspect was driving, came to rest next to the home at 2755 Western Avenue and colliding with a Bedford police cruiser.
Neighbors told the Lawrence County Zephyr that the shots could be heard several blocks.
Bedford Mayor Sam Craig, Bedford Police Chief Terry Moore and Lawrence County Prosecutor Sam Arp II was on the scene along with numerous law enforcement officers.
Police cruisers lined Western Avenue, the alley west of Western Avenue and 29th Street throughout the night into Friday morning.
A chaplain arrived on the scene about 11:30 pm to assist the family and emergency personnel.
As of 4:30 am the scene was still being processed by the Indiana State Police.

The Indiana State Police released the following press release just before 4:35 am Friday morning on the shooting.

Detectives from the Indiana State Police Bloomington and Jasper Districts initiated, late Thursday evening, an investigation into a police officer-action shooting involving three officers from the Bedford Police Department.

The incident started earlier Thursday, at approximately 9:57 p.m., when a female subject arrived at the Bedford Police Department wishing to file a harassment complaint and report she was followed by a male subject, later identified as Daymon A. Hubbard, 47, of Bedford, to the police department in a gray Chevrolet Trax.

At approximately 10:05 p.m., a Bedford officer believed he observed the Chevrolet Trax on 17th Street near the K Street intersection.
Bedford officers followed the vehicle to the Western Avenue area when a vehicle pursuit was initiated.

The Chevrolet Trax struck a patrol vehicle during the pursuit.
When Hubbard arrived at 2755 Western Avenue, the incident escalated, and three Bedford Police Department officers discharged their weapons.
At approximately 10:37 p.m., officers requested an ambulance, and Hubbard was transported to IU Health Bedford Hospital where he succumbed to his gunshot wounds.

The incident involving the Bedford Police Officers was captured on body cameras. Investigators from the Bloomington and Jasper Districts as well as Crime Scene Investigators from both districts responded to the scene. Crime Scene Investigators documented and processed evidence at the incident location.
The Lawrence County Prosecutor's Office responded to the scene to assist with the investigation.
No uninvolved citizens or officers were injured during the incident.
Bedford Police Department Chief Terry Moore advised the three officers would be placed on administrative leave.
The information in this release is preliminary as the matter remains under investigation and detectives are working closely with the prosecutor’s office.
This makes the second officer involved shootings this year in Lawrence County.
In February, Lawrence County Deputy Joshua Rhoades and Mitchell Police Officer Christian Anderson were injured in that officer involved shooting.
Anthony Richmond, West Baden, Indiana the suspect in that case died at the scene.
