Accident report released on U.S. 50 West that sent five year old to Louisville hospital Thursday

HURON - AUGUST 25 , 2023 - reliminary investigation revealed that Janice McCloud (69 years old of Mitchell) was driving a 2021 Lincoln SUV west on US 50. McCloud reported that she began to feel ill. The Lincoln traveled across the center line and off the roadway. It then traveled through the yard of 5328 US 50 West, then through the yard of 5302 US 50 West. The Lincoln struck a parked and unattended Kia Sportage in the driveway of 5302 US 50 West. This impact caused the Kia to strike a parked and unattended Toyota Tacoma pick up truck.

Both of those vehicle belonged to the homeowners of the residence. The Lincoln then continued toward the house, striking two individuals standing near the porch of the residence. An adult male, Dennis Fields, and a five-year-old male were struck by the Lincoln, which then collided with and destroyed the porch. The Lincoln came to rest against the house.

McCloud and Fields were both transported by IU Health Ambulance to the hospital. The juvenile was flown from the scene to a Louisville Hospital. Per state law regarding serious bodily injury crashes, McCloud was offered and consented a blood draw. The toxicology results are pending. At this time, neither speed or impairment is believed to have contributed to the crash.

The investigating officer was Kenton Carter. He was assisted by Sgt. Michael Williams, Officer Travis Atchison, Detective Sgt. Michael Ramos (crash reconstructionist), and Sheriff Greg Day. Assisting at the scene were Marion Township Fire Department, Huron Fire Department, Bedford Fire Department, IU Health Lifeline Ambulance, Air Evac helicopter, and Jackson's Heavy Haul Towing.
