9th Annual Bertha Mission Easter Dinner offers food and fellowship for many

LAWRENCE COUNTY - MARCH 25, 2023 - The 9th annual Bertha Mission Easter Dinner is now in the books thanks to the community support and donations. The event offering many a place to eat and fellowship with one another.




Over 100 at home deliveries were made during this year's event, and many more served at the two locations in Lawrence County.



There were two locations where the meal was served which included the 1st Baptist Church located on 20th Street in Bedford, and Tulip Christian Church located at 900 Tulip Street in Mitchell.

" The Easter Dinner does not take as many volunteers as the Thanksgiving Meal, but this event today took about 60 volunteers to serve those attending," said Janice Nickeo Pendergrass Director Bertha's Mission. " This really does take a lot of hours and hard work to put this together," added Pendergrass



The event takes several weeks to prepare and get things ready.


More than 55 hams were prepared with 400 cans of green beans, corn and carrots, as wells as over 1,000 dinner rolls were used to serve those in attendance today.


" We want to thank the many individuals, churches, and businesses who helped contribute food donations, financial contributions and much more for this event. The price of food has gone up,"


The price of one ham costing approximately $20, this year's event costing a little more than in the past. Of course, Bertha's Mission is there to serve the needs of not only for today's Easter Dinner but throughout the year.



The Bedford Wal-Mart donated apparel for attendees to take home for free, as well as gift cards.

Bertha's Mission has always been " Food for the Soul" based off the scripture Matthew 25:35-36.

Meals are served Tuesday - Thursday from 1:00 pm to 3:30 pm and deliveries for the elderly and disadvantaged. Call 317-480-0085 to make reservation for delivery.



There are three fundraisers that Bertha's Mission hosts which include:

  • Free Community Easter Dinner

  • Uncover Hunger Event held in September

  • Free Community Thanksgiving Dinner

  • First Step 5K Walk/Run by Dr. Jim Sowders

Hunger is not easy recognized in the people around you, but there is hunger that does exist even in the local community.


The need was great prior to COVID-19 and has increased extensively since March 2019.


Bertha's Mission opened on September 17, 2013 and was an immediate success serving 50-60 meals per day. From 2018 -2023 Bertha's Mission has served over 79,385 meals in Bedford, Mitchell, Heltonville, Fort Ritner, Oolitic, Williams and Tunnelton.
