2 arrested after separate shooting investigations in Washington

WASHINGTON - JANUARY 15, 2023 - On January 15, 2023, at approximately 1:15 AM, Officers with the Washington Police Department’s 3rd shift, and Deputies with the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of the Antique Bar on East Main Street after receiving multiple calls of shots fired. It was reported to Officers on scene that a physical altercation had taken place between 30-year-old Edwin Gilberto Marrero Gelpi and a female. It was reported that while Edwin was leaving the scene, he pointed a handgun at an individual, and fired multiple shots into the air. It was reported that there were no injuries as a result of the shooting. A Washinton Police Department Detective and Washington Police Department Crime Scene Investigator were requested to respond to the scene to assist in the investigation.


Officers were able to locate Edwin’s vehicle at a residence on West Walnut and established a perimeter around it. After a period of time, Edwin exited the residence and was taken into custody without incident. Edwin was arrested by the Washington Police Department Detective on charges of Criminal Recklessness with a Deadly Weapon, Pointing a Firearm, and Domestic Battery.

At approximately 3:27 AM, the above-mentioned Officers were again dispatched to the area of the Antique Bar on E Main St after another report of shots fired. It was reported to Officers that a large fight had taken place and that a male subject subsequently identified as 28 year old Moises Vargas had fired a handgun into the air. It was reported that Moises had left the scene in a vehicle. Officers located the vehicle Moises was suspected to be in and conducted a traffic stop. Moises was taken into custody without incident and a handgun was located during the traffic stop. Moises was arrested by Washinton Police Department 3rd shift Captain on a charge of Criminal Recklessness with a Deadly Weapon. No injuries were reported as a result of the shooting.

*It is not suspected that these incidents were related, and all individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty*
